In efforts to bring affordable advertising to the local business community, on October 2, 2003 the Monroe Guardian will become a shopping guide. The Guardian newspaper was founded in 1939 in Flat Rock, Mich., and moved to Monroe County in February, 1987. The first issue of The Guardian appeared on newsstands May 12, 1939. Published by John Watt, a long-time newspaperman and photographer, the paper was a four-page tabloid printed in a small office located at 26434 Erie St. in Flat Rock. The one-man operation covered Michigan's Huron River Valley villages. A one-year subscription to the newspaper cost just $1in 1939 and a single copy cost 3 cents. Ownership of the newspaper changed hands a few times before the late Heinz Prechter purchased it along with the Dearborn Press and Guide, the Ile Camera (Grosse Ile), the News Herald (Southgate) and the Mellus Newspapers in 1985 and formed Heritage Media Inc. Prechter then moved The Guardian to Monroe County in 1986 and purchased the historic Carl F. Payson Post 60 American Legion Hall at 23 W. First St. for the newspaper's home. The Guardian was purchased by 21st Century Newspapers Inc. in 2002 and the newspaper's offices were moved from historic downtown Monroe to 15649 S. Telegraph Road.
